In 2004 my wife and I at 27123 Apple Max Road, Rockbridge, Ohio 43149 now known as: Ohio Family FISHING at
Country Cove Village had a dream about making it easier for Families to have an entertaining experience.
We knew that it was just too darn expensive to raise a Family and include fun entertainment for most.
Since fresh water fishing helps build character and a respect for nature, we decided that there was indeed a
niche to be filled for Families. That being a pay lake in a Family Park like setting with a low admittance fee,
free from Alcoholic drinks, cussing, rough-housing and pets with Family hours.
We talked to many people already in the pay lake business and they thought we were crazy and assured us
that such a concept would never fly. Because you had to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and of
course you had to serve beer and such to make any kind of money. (We did not think so!)
Well with our dream and lots of prayers we started out with just a 15ft. X 20ft. Canvas tent bought from Celina
Tent, Inc., a two car garage to serve as a store front and two artisan spring ponds.
We added Large Mouth Bass, Channel Catfish and White Crappie, hoping that with the artisan springs there
would with proper management, ( Catch and Release ) and time develop Spring Spawnings.
Next we hung out a 10ft. banner between two pine trees announcing our opening and hoped for the best.
The best started to develop for both us and Families that Spring and Summer of 2004. We were busy that
year not only learning what would work best for Families that came to fish but setting ground rules for those
who did.
We had decided that we should have two admittance prices one for Families and one for Individuals.
Families would be $20 (Come and Go all day without paying again.) after all kids do get tired and a nap and
Families need to eat. Had just one problem there, a very few tried trying telling us that Cousins,Nieces, Grand
Parents, Uncles and Aunts all were Family and needed to be included in that price. Not; a Family means to
us: Dad and /or Mom with children 20 years of age or younger, living under the same roof.
Then of course there were those who tried to sneak in alcohol, but we either say or were informed about this
matter and it was quickly resolved. Actually our rules are simple, Family based and work very well.
Now just a vary fast 5 years later, wonderful Families from the 5 counties that surround Hocking County,
Ohio, Families from Ohio and the 6 states that surround Ohio and the rest of the U.S.A. and other reaches of
the world have kept us busy and the bills paid and allowed us to grow.
We now have a Bait and Tackle Shop, 3 ponds and in the Spring of 2010 plan on creating a night crawler
farm, create two small ponds to raise minnows and gold fish and now because of enjoyable Families that
have demonstrated, if you in good faith try to help Families they in turn will appreciate your efforts and keep
you busy with plans for the future.
